Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effectiveness and implementation of innovative strategies
using digital media in enhancing the communicative competence of English Language
Education (ELE) students. In the context of globalization and the demands of 21st-century
skills, communicative competence (encompassing grammatical, sociolinguistic, discourse,
and strategic competencies) is a key pillar of professional success. However, traditional
teaching methods often fail to provide adequate authentic environments to practice all these
dimensions of competence. The innovative strategies tested in this study include the use of
Virtual Reality (VR) Simulations to train pragmatics and the role of Interactive Podcasting
to increase spontaneous speaking fluency. The research employs an Action Research
approach involving 80 fourth-semester students in an English Language Education study
program. Data was collected through speaking ability tests (pre-test and post-test),
classroom observation, and student perception questionnaires. The results indicate a
significant increase in students' overall communicative competence scores (p < 0.05) after
the digital intervention, especially in the aspects of sociolinguistic and strategic
competencies. In conclusion, the structured and targeted integration of digital media is a
vital strategy for creating authentic and interactive learning experiences, thereby
substantially improving students' communicative readiness for the real world.
