Abstract

The retribution-centric criminal justice system has long dominated legal practices in Indonesia. However, in the past decade, the paradigm of restorative justice has emerged as a promising alternative. This article aims to explore the potential implementation of restorative justice within the Indonesian criminal justice system. Using a qualitative approach, this research analyzes the concepts, principles, and best practices of restorative justice implementation in various countries. The findings indicate that restorative justice has the ability to fulfill more holistic sentencing objectives, with a focus on relationship restoration, offender accountability, and victim empowerment. Though there are challenges related to public acceptance and harmonization with the existing legal system, this article concludes that restorative justice holds great potential for wider adoption within the Indonesian criminal justice system. Policy recommendations are put forth to encourage the adoption and implementation of restorative justice models suited to the local context.
